What is Swine Flu?

Swine Flu could be the next major disease epidemic. It appears to have emerged in Mexico has killed more than 100 people and infected more 1000 who have recovered. Cases and suspected cases have now been identified in the USA, New Zealand, France, Scotland, Israel, Spain, and elsewhere.

How many people have died from swine flu?

In the current outbreak of swine flu, just 20 deaths of 103 suspected fatal cases have actually been confirmed as having been caused by the new virus. That’s a lethality rate of just over 1%. Spanish Flu in 1918 had a lethality rate of 2.5%.

How many people infected?

Cases in Mexico number around 1600, according to Mexican Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova.

Is this swine flu the same strain of flu that killed millions in 1918, the so-called Spanish flu?

No. The present strain is a type A influenza virus of class H1N1, certainly, but it is a different sub-species. Influenza viruses evolve very rapidly in response to changes in the immune systems of their hosts.

What does H1N1 mean?

The “H” refers to the viral hemagglutinin protein, and the “N” refers to the neuraminidase protein (enzyme). There are H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3 strains of swine flu endemic in pig populations.

Whatever happened to bird flu?

Strains of avian influenza, or bird flu, are still around, these viruses exist in host species in Asia and potentially elsewhere and could still make the leap to humans at any time.

Why pigs?

Influenza viruses can exist endemically in pigs as well as birds and other species. The current strain of interest, swine flu, is endemic in pig populations in Mexico but has now spread to people.

Didn’t we have swine flu before?

Swine flu has been present for years and commonly infects people who work with pigs. An outbreak at the Fort Dix army base killed and hospitalized soldiers there and led to an ill-fated mass-vaccination campaign under President Ford. An outbreak of swine flu happened in the Philipines in 2007.

Was the new swine flu genetically engineered as a bioweapon?

It is perhaps possible to engineer a virus, but the precursors to this present strain of influenza has been seen in the wild for years and so it would seem highly unlikely that it was synthesised. Is there a lab that could synthesise a whole new viable viral species from combined segments of human, bird, and pig influenza viruses?

But how did porcine, avian, and human viruses get mixed together?

These flu viruses have a segmented genome containing eight pieces of RNA. If two strains infect a single cell their progeny undergo reassortment so that new strains emerge. Pigs are a particularly good biological mixing bowl for flu viruses, it takes just one lucky reassortment that can infect humans to then make the species leap. This has happened several times in the past.

What is WHO doing about the outbreak?

The World Health Organisation will meet in Geneva on Tuesday (April 28) to discuss whether to raise the pandemic alert level.

Intelligent Medicine

Forgot to take your medication?

I was thumbing through the Discovery Channel Magazine issued March 2009. And I was so bowled over on an article about a medicine embedded with chips to track the patient so as not to forget taking the tab. This gave me an apprehensions or misgivings that this might give an unwholesome repercussions to the patient.

They call this The Intelligent Medicine. It's a smart pill contrived by the Proteus Biomedical, its a pill embedded with micro-sensors that, once swallowed it will turn you to a medical tracking device. They embed micro-sensors into an existing drugs and devices, which transmit information securely to a patient's mobile phone through the internet.

The type of information recorded by the receiver includes the type of drug and dosage, and reports of physiologic measures such as heart rate, activity and respiratory rate. And if you forget to take your Raisin? An alert message sent to your mobile phone within an hour of when you were supposed to take a pill will make sure you don't miss a dose.

Experience Boracay

Boracay has charmed vacationers with its powder white sand, crystal blue waters and purposely laid-back pace. Located at the norther tip of Panay province, Boracay is about three hours away from Manila. French, German, Spanish and English can be heard spoken in the Island. Sun worshippers from all over the world visit Boracay yearly, and some have even made it their second home.

The culinary fare is equally exciting featuring a wide range from Thai and Austrian to Belgian and Filipino. Numerous water sport facilities, including dive shops are on hand as well as a sprinkling of bars and discos. Most visitors, however prefer to sit back and enjoy the sun.

Boracay Island, Philippines Known far and wide as an island paradise.

Experience Boracay and Make a Memory!

Fridays Resort Boracay is a Department of Tourism AAA accredited self-contained 34-room (soon to be 40-room once the new 6 rooms would be completed) resort with fresh water swimming pool, beachfront bar, and 120-seat capacity restaurant considered by many to be the finest on the island.

Le Soleil de Boracay. A dash of world-class service. A service of local warmth. All heated up by the seduction of a Mediterrenean atmosphere. These are the ingredients that make Le Soleil de Boracay stand out from the rest. Our Passion Is Your Pleasure. Le Soleil de Boracay has got the best of both worlds. This 22-room hotel is enchantingly located at the beach front right in the middle of the three-kilometer stretch of white sand and invitingly cool crystal-clear waters of Boracay. So whether it is for business or pleasure, your radiance shines at Mother Nature here at Le Soleil de Boracay Hotel

Boracay Regency Main and North Wings which are located right at the beachfront boast rooms perfectly illustrate why Boracay Regency is the first Triple-A rated resort on the beachfront of the island. These spacious and well-appointed rooms all feature blissfully comfortable beds, stately bathrooms and all the modern conveniences that will help ensure your stay is one that speaks of nothing but comfort and luxury.

The Regency Main and North Wing both proudly offer the finest accommodations this island-paradise can offer. The Regency started with the Main wing then constructed the North Wing followed by the newest wing which is called the "Garden Wing".

The Blue Lagoon Boracay Resort, also known among locals as the Malingay Cove, used to be a secret getaway. In fact, when people say “Pagudpud Beach”, it usually means Saud Beach which is about twenty minutes away from Blue Lagoon. Recently, however, because of its rustic beauty, Maira-ira (the name given to the entire stretch of beach in Blue Lagoon) is fast gaining popularity.

During the summer, the cerulean waters of Blue Lagoon are idyllic, placid and serene. Though during the rainy season, the surfs are strong and unfriendly. Even if it’s summer, however, make sure to equip children (if any) with life vests for added protection.

Sloping gradually from the shore, the underwater flooring is composed mostly of off-white sand which has a grainy quality because of shattered shells. The underfoot obstruction is minimal to none making it perfectly safe to swim barefoot. Beware of the slight undertow, though, as well as the drop after the gradual slope if you don’t want to find yourself in waters higher than the average person’s height.

The Blue Lagoon Boracay Resort, which was completed in 2006, is located at the natural Tulubhanbeach on Boracay Island in the Philippines. Staying at the Blue Lagoon Resort will surely help to relax your mind and re-charge your energy. Our resort, with a purpose, has exceptionally chosen the small, more remote cove of Tulubhan in the south-eastern part of Boracay, rather than the overcrowded Whitebeach on the eastern side of the island. Staying at the Resort will make you avoid seeing congested big hotel structures which are nowadays typical for prominent tourist destinations but you are going to experience the distinct and original charm of the Paradise Island of Boracay.

If ever you get tired of sunbathing or just of not having to do and to worry anything, we will be happy to take you to the famous Whitebeach (with our own Shuttle service) which could offer you any kind of entertainment and activities. Also at the Whitebeach we are always at your service: See us at our restaurant 'Liebevoll' for any questions or support you require or just satisfy your dining expectations with fresh salads, daily fresh seafood or just a super tasty Pastas and Pizzas.

If you decide to choose The Blue Lagoon Resort as your preferred accommodation in Boracay, you are choosing incomparable suites or our beach villas with a tropical yet modern ambience. Enjoy the comfort of our well trained service team which is going to make your stay truly enjoyable and memorable.

As part of our wish to make your vacation a most convenient, hassle-free and memorable, we not only make your Holiday Planning at Boracay but we can also make your travel arrangement from your point of origin until The Blue Lagoon , vice versa.

Why Is Honey Golden In Color?

Ever wondered why?

Simply because of this.....

This may be that petty but I just can resist to post.

Pet Society: Cheats, Tweaks, Tricks

A lot of people are interested in cheats for Pet Society. Sorry to say though, that there are no true cheats for Playfish’s Pet Society. Nope, there is no “god mode,” no infinite happiness, no unlimited coins, and no key press combinations of any sort during the start screen. However, that’s not to say there aren’t any tricks you could learn.

In a game like Pet Society, being able to cheat would virtually destroy the entire point of the game, and if you’re intending to cheat, be aware that Playfish is taking measures against it. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look for ways to better your avatar from more experienced players in a more “legal” fashion.

A common question people have is how do I earn a lot of money? Somehow, there are players that have multiple rooms, the most expensive items, and still have plenty to spare. So how do the rich do it?

Yes, you can clean and play with your pet, and you can run your daily races and try to win, but this is a social game, and what better way to earn money in a social game than… well, be social. The number one way to earn some extra cash in Pet Society (aside from flat out buying it) is to have friends (lots, and lots, and lots of friends). Most of the rich veteran players have over 100 different friends in their society, and this equates to lots of time spent grooming, feeding, and bathing those pets for money.

Too mundane you say? Well, another option is to earn those “Paw Points” and level up to unlock those new features and items. If you’ve heeded the above advice and have a number of friends, pick one that you know you can trust and send them the most expensive item you have as a gift. Sending gifts earns you a hefty portion of Paw Points, and once they receive it, have them send it right back (next, rinse and repeat). Now you both earn a little something and don’t loose anything.

However, if you do intend to utilize this particular method, you should be aware that like any other game, Pet Society is not free of bugs. There have been user reports of occasionally losing items via this method so proceed at your own risk. With that said, there have also been reports of this method accidentally duplicating sent gifts. Sometimes you’ll get lucky, sometimes not.

Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg as far as this game goes. With a constantly growing and active community, there are always more tricks to learn, and forums to join. If you want to learn more, or just meet some new players, definitely check out Pet Society Chatter. It’s a great source of tips, strategies, contests, and an overall friendly and active community.

Blog's Worth?

Ever wondered if its possible to sell your blog and how much it might be worth? If you have been a reader of this blog for a while you will know that the original owner sold it last year for $9,500. Not a huge amount though in this big business sense, but then again hardly peanuts.

So how do you find out the worth of your blog. Well firstly let's make some assumptions here. You have an ad revenue, you have RSS subscribers and you have more than single digit page view everyday.

There is a very useful tool called cubestat which will do the calculation for you.

As you can see from the screenshot, having entered the URL it returns some pretty nice information. An estimated value, the number of page views and the estimated ad revenue. Nice to be able to track this type of information if you are considering a sale. Of course, an estimated value doesn’t necessarily equate to a sales price, especially in this economy.
If nothing else you can find out the value of your favorite blogs.
Check it out here.. Cubestat.

Cebu

Cebu (Cebuano: Sugbo, Spanish: Cebú), is one of the provinces of the Philippines. It is located to the east of Negros island; to the west of Leyte, and Bohol islands. It is located on both sides by the straits of Bohol (between Cebu, and Bohol), and Tañon (between Cebu, and Negros). Cebu is located between 9°25'N and 11°15'N latitude, and between 123°13'E, and 124°5'E longitude in the center of the Philippine Islands.

Cebu is where the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan planted the Cross of Christianity in the name of Spain in 1521. But even before Cebu became the Occidental gateway to the Orient, it was already a popular entry point among Asian merchants.

Cebu has since blossomed into a choice tourist destination, with many leisure establishments taking full advantage of its sea-valley-and-mountain location.

Metropolitan Cebu, the country's second biggest metropolis, is the political, economic, educational and cultural center of the Visayas. Widest class of accommodations from luxurious resorts to budget hotels, shopping malls, entertainment halls, casinos and golf fairways are ever present in the metro to cater to every tourist's whim.

The rest of Cebu's 166 islands and islets are fringed with sandy beaches and sapphire-clear waters teeming with marine life, perfect for divers.

Things to do:
- See Magellan’s Cross planted in 1521 by the explorer
- Visit Fort San Pedro, the nucleus of Spanish settlement in the Philippines
- Light joss sticks and have your fortune told at the Taoist Temple
- Spot amazing bird life at the Olango Wildlife Sanctuary
- Scuba dive in the coral island of Mactan

A Tribute To This Wandering Soul 2

Who would have not miss this? Dried fish or colloquially called "buwad" in Cebuano or "daeng" in Tagalog. Best with vinegar and it really get into my nerves how I really missed it.

Cebuanos, like many other provincial residents, love their dried fish. Millions and millions of fish are harvested, split open and de-gutted, liberally sprinkled with salt and left out to dry in the hot sun. These fish are laid on screens so that the process of air and sun drying can occur faster. The salt is necessary to prevent deadly bacteria from forming on the surface of the fish. Once the fish are dry enough, they can be stored for months without risk of deterioration.

In any dried market in the Philippines there are a sea of dried fish vendors so buwad2I wandered around and picked out the one stall that seemed to have a lot of stock on offer. Right beside the retail area, the stall had several workers who were processing newly arrived dried fish. Apparently, one has to take a small brush (like a nail brush) and brush off the mold or unsightly salt remnants from each piece of dried fish! Talk about labor intensive! The dried fish are then stacked on baskets and can be packaged up in plastic and heat sealed if you so desire. At PHP70-480 per kilo depending on type of fish, a large stall must have at least PHP50,000 - 100,000 worth of dried fish inventory! Max was the proprietor of the stall I settled on transacting with. Shy guy this Max, as it took some convincing to get him in a photo of the stall. He was amiable enough, didn’t give much discount, but his stuff looked top notch and now that I have returned home, tastes terrific!

I have two all-time buwad favorites: boneless danggit and buwad3what tagalogs refer to simply as tuyo (which can be lots of different fish but I like the bony ones). The boneless danggit of Max were superb. Large or small, the bones had been extracted and the stuff fried up nice and crisp. At PHP420 a kilo, it sounds like a lot but that must have been at least 5 kilos of live wait danggit to make a kilo of boneless dried fish. I can sit happily at breakfast with several fried buwad na danggit, a sawsawan (dip) of spicy vinegar, a large plate of steaming rice and a fried egg or two mixed in. This is the ultimate comfort food and there is nothing anywhere in the world that comes close to it. Whereas for tinapa, I can substitute kippers elsewhere on the planet.

The dried squid also looked good so I bought a kilo of that as well for PHP440. buwad4Either fried or barbecued, it possesses a unique taste that must be acquired early in life. I much prefer danggit or tuyo but once in a while it’s nice to have some dried squid. Also good with vinegar and chillis. I bought several other kinds of buwad and managed to fill a medium sized box with over 5 kilos of the stuff. That should easily last our household a month or more. While I love the taste of buwad or daing, I do not like the lingering smell after it has been fried up in the kitchen… anyone have any ideas how to rid the kitchen/house of the pungent odor besides boiling up a pot of vinegared water???

And I'm Over With It...

I was drowned with my work and don't have much time thinking what to post next and that's why it took me months to update again. "Irony!...." This is my blowup to myself for the past months but I think it boils down to this conclusion that I was just work-shy. And I think I'm over with it, its time to go back what it was before and so as not to prolong the "pen tan" I don't know if that's the right spelling but it means stupidity here's my share starting this month.

NINE 'WORDS' WOMEN USE.......
(1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.
(2)
Five Minutes : If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.
(3)
Nothing : The 'calm' before the storm. This means something, and you should be on guard. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.
(4)
Go Ahead : This is a dare, not permission. Don't fall into the trap!
(5)
Loud Sigh : This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here, arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)
(6)
That's Okay : This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. It means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.
(7)
Thanks: When a woman is thanking you, do not question or faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a LOT ' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say ‘you’re welcome’. That will bring on a 'whatever' attitude).
(8)
Whatever : Is a woman's way of saying F-- YOU!
(9)
Don't worry about it, I got it : Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3.
